Online shoppers active on Gray Thursday
Not content with waiting for Black Friday to get their bank account back in credit, more and more online businesses are pushing for Thanksgiving Day sales.
Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, got its name because retailers’ accounts finally went from being in the red, to black. However, it is rapidly becoming the second day in the holiday online shopping surge.
Thanksgiving, long a popular day for researching Black Friday bargains, is fast becoming the day to begin the holiday shopping spree and is being called Grey Thursday.
According to a National Retail Federation survey, consumers are increasingly using the Internet to do their holiday shopping. Consumers surveyed by the National Retail Federation said they will do just over 30 percent of their holiday shopping on websites compared with 28.9 percent last year.
Many major e-tailers are taking advantage of the trend towards turkey day Internet use by offering Thanksgiving Day-specific deals. Wal-Mart, CompUSA, Best Buy, Toysrus and Circuit City all have Gray Thursday online-only promotions ranging from large discounts, two-for-one deals to free delivery.
