Newspaper print ad spend down

Online ad spend continues to rise in the face of falling offline print ad spending, reports the Newspaper Association of America.

Figures released this week from the NAA showed a 21 percent rise in online ad spend to $773 million in the third quarter, the 14th consecutive quarter of double-digit percentage growth. In the meantime, print advertising spend has fallen 9 percent to just over $10 billion.

Classified print ad, retail ad and national ad spends were down by 17 percent, 4.9 percent and 2.5 percent respectively.

"Broader economic issues are impacting our industry the same way they are impacting other media—the continued fallout from declines in the housing market clearly affects real estate, recruitment and retail advertising," NAA president and chief executive John Sturm said in an announcement.

Online advertising now accounts for 7.1 percent of overall newspaper ad spending, up from 5.4 percent in Q3 06.
