European holiday spend will grow fastest online
In the UK, France and Germany, total spending during the upcoming holiday season will show a slight increase. However, according to a recent survey by comScore, online spending will show much stronger growth.
The survey, conducted between October 22 and October 28, 2007, found that more than 60% of respondents expected to spend at least what was spent during the 2006 Holiday season overall. Researchers also found that 36% of respondents expected to increase the amount of money spent online during the shopping season; only about 14% said they would spend less online in 2007.
“Online sales appear set to continue growing at a much faster rate than total retail sales and could be the difference between an ok Christmas and a great Christmas for some retailers.” said Bob Ivins, comScore EVP of International Markets. “The popularity of online shopping is set to reach an all time high this year.”
The survey also found that 48% of UK respondents have already begun shopping for the holiday, 36% of German respondents and 19% of French respondents have begun shopping.
When European shoppers head online, they prefer to pay by credit card, debit card or bank transfer. Paypal is another favorite, but that payment option falls, on average, to around 16% preference rate.
