Publisher uses viral marketing to promote new book

Publisher Random House Canada has come up with an unusual way of promoting a new book using the Internet and the power of Web 2.0.

by Helen Leggatt

In a bid to attract more readers to Douglas Coupland’s contemporary fiction, and a new book launch, Random House Canada worked with Crush Toronto to come up with a viral campaign using online video.

The nine short videos are all on YouTube. You can watch a presentation of all nine here.

“Working this way could work for any book, the same way that record labels made videos for all their artists,” said Crush Toronto’s creative director Gary Thomas.

“Some books, or writers, lend themselves to this medium more naturally than others, but there are lots of creative venues to explore. We think it’s a great way to reach a new generation of people who may not otherwise consider themselves readers," Thomas added.
