Compete: iPhone is changing online shopping

The iPhone is having an interesting effect on online behaviors, from shopping to interaction. According to a recent report from Compete, Inc., indicates that iPhone users are less likely to cross-shop for other phones and are more likely to be technologically savvy.

by Kristina Knight

“The iPhone represents an important milestone in the evolution of consumer attitudes and behavior towards advanced wireless devices and services,” said Adam Guy, Compete’s general manager of telecommunications and media. “As the mass market continues to adopt increasingly advanced technologies, players throughout the wireless value chain will find new opportunities to offer dynamic and flexible products.”

The study found that iPhone users are about half as likely to shop for other phone models. The iPhone launch drew more interest than the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 launches.

What is most interesting, though, is that users of these high-tech phones are apt to be using them for personal business. Forget about checking work email or staying in touch with their business, advanced wireless users want to check personal email or favorite websites on their phones. About 68% of these users say having Web access in the most important facet of their phone. Only about 17% are interested in mobile television offerings, which indicates that content websites and social networks are more important at this early stage of the mobile 'Net.

My family have been Mac users since the first 128k Mac, but we have both Mac and PC in our homes, because my wife and daughter were forced to use PCs in their school and work. We all appreciate technology, but all feel that needless complexity too often make computers and mobile devices in our lives "part of the problem" instead of "part of the solution". The arrogant designers of software, devices and operating systems seem to force us to do everything "their way"; giving us not what we want, but what they want to give us...and making us pay for every single feature and frequent replacement and upgrades. IMHO, they are underestimating the power of the Mac, the iPhone, user-friendliness and useability to change both the use of technology and existing closed business models. The power of the iPhone is that it is leading the way to consumer choice, consumer useability, the freedom of the web on mobile devices, unlocking of devices, and the reduction of the carriers to "dumb pipes".
