Online television to rise in popularity in the U.K.
The British are slowly switching demand from traditional television, satellite and cable to more on-demand solutions, according to entertainment market analysts Screen Digest.
In four years time the British online television market will be worth around $362 million, while the growth in downloading of movies is expected to slow.
Experts say that the length of movies isn’t conducive to watching them on a computer, and that it was far better suited to watching shorter television programming such as soaps and reality shows.
“Broadcasters and pay TV operators will come under increasing pressure from many major ‘virtual networks,’ such as YouTube and Joost, who will be competing for viewers’ time and attention,” said Arash Amel, senior analyst for Screen Digest.
“This will be exacerbated by hardware manufacturers, such as Apple, Microsoft and Sony, who will be far more adept at selling TV shows because of their existing device relationships with the consumer.”
British online distribution will be dominated by music for the foreseeable future, says the report, the market for which is predicted to grow to just over $571 million by 2011.
