Google gets gadgets

Google is to provide advertisers and agencies with a more dynamic and imaginative way to interact with consumers.

The new interactive, online advertising format is called Google Gadget Ads and enables the use of animation, video, games, audio and real-time feeds (examples). They are more commonly referred to as widgets and, according to recent research by comScore, are effective at driving traffic.

Google Gadget Ads will initially be made available only to invited advertisers who have produced content-rich ads in the past. Eventually, Google Gadget Ads will be more widely available.

The ads, which require user initiation to begin any animation or audio, are to be standard size ad units. Placements will be sold on either a CPC or CPM basis, via Google’s auction service.

“The joy of Gadget Ads is that they are interactive and fun without being intrusive, and can be used without people having to leave the webpage they were originally on," said Matt Brittin, Country Sales Director of Google U.K.
