Yahoo! is a favorite for Japanese surfers

A recent report from comScore indicates that Yahoo! sites are beginning to edge out competitor Google with Japanese surfers.

by Kristina Knight

The report shows that Yahoo! sites have 77% reach while Google sites have only 58% reach. Microsoft sites are as popular as Google with a 58% reach. Rakuten, with 53% reach and with 47% reach, rounded out the top five most popular sites.

Maru Sato, Managing Director of comScore Japan said, “Yahoo! is the most popular property in Japan by some margin. Behind them, Google and Microsoft sites are locked in a battle for second place, with 31.3 million unique visitors and 31.0 million unique visitors respectively.”

Roughly 54 million Japanese surfers logged on in June, that is just under 50% of the population over 15 years of age. Another interesting fact is that Japanese users spend about 15 days online each month!

There were a few surprises in the new ranking, namely that user participation news site IZA.NE.JP was the fastest growing website. The site saw an increase in traffic of about 52%, growing to 3.5 million unique visitors. The second-fastest growing site was Mizuho Financial Group. They saw a 34% increase in traffic. Mozilla also showed strong growth of 26% in June, thanks in part to the new Firefox browser.
