Study: entertainment, news most popular on the web

Internet users spend about half of their time online tracking entertainment and news, according to a recent study.

by Megan Shannon

Searching and downloading entertainment and news content far surpassed e-mailing, shopping and research, according to a Nielsen/NetRatings four-year study. In fact, over this time period the research company recorded a 37 percent increase in online video and online news reports views.

The study said, the surge in available information and the new, various ways it has become available is attracting more and more online users. Companies like YouTube have contributed to this increase.

The increase in entertainment and news downloads have even surpassed the 35 percent increase the study noticed in search engine usage.

The study also said that time spent on commerce sites like Amazon.com actually fell and accounted for only 15 percent of the time spent on the Internet in 2007.

Time spent on communication, such as e-mail, also fell an astounding 28 percent to only 33 percent of users' time online. According to the study, this is a result of an increase in popularity of instant messaging systems and programs like MySpace and FaceBook where people can communicate without using e-mail.
