Gold rush ahead for Internet TV advertising

Internet television advertising revenue will equal 18 percent of all Internet advertising by 2011, according to new forecasts from Understanding & Solutions.

by Helen Leggatt

Recent reports from iSuppli estimate worldwide Internet television ad revenues for 2011 to be $5.8 billion. New forecasts from Understanding & Solutions puts the figure up around the $10 billion mark.

"Internet TV will challenge the traditional broadcast industry through rights distribution, on-demand content versus linear broadcast and the generation of advertising revenues," says Alison Casey, Business Director at Understanding & Solutions.

It would seem that, despite initial concerns over copyrighted material being uploaded to websites such as YouTube, networkers, broadcasters and producers alike are now clamouring to move their content online in what the report describes as a “gold rush”.

“The level of penetration already achieved by internet video is mind-blowing,” said John Bird, principal consultant with Understanding & Solutions. "In the US alone, active Internet video users are streaming an average of 55 videos per month — and this is just the beginning."

The advertising on YouTube is hard to spot, which is quite nice.

What is Internet TV and How to View It As the name aptly suggests, Internet TV is the delivery of streaming or real-time audio and video television programs over the Web. It is different from video sites that deliver downloadable video content because Internet TV sites stream content in real-time. Which means a person sitting in London can stream an episode of Oprah which a housewife in New York can watch live over her Internet TV as and when it is being broadcast.
