Yahoo refines pre-search query function

Back in 2004, Google launched its pre-search query function, Google Suggest. In June this year Ask3D was launched, offering a similar query refinement feature and more recently Yahoo has jumped on the pre-search query bandwagon with Search Suggest.

Yahoo’s Search Suggest was launched earlier this month. But it's already been improved upon and even has a new name - Search Assist.

The pre-searchfunction works, as others do, by providing a list of related topics as the searcher is typing. Search Assist only activates after typing is paused for a few seconds.

One key benefit to search marketers is that it will minimise spelling mistakes, offering users the correctly spelt words and relevant phrases. This won’t be such a great function for search marketers who may have been benefiting from misspelled words.

With Search Assist, Yahoo has taken functionality a step further and offers searchers related queries, as well as keywords and phrases. To do this it uses technology acquired with AltaVista, called Prisma. Search Assist takes the top 20 pages of Prisma’s results to formulate suggested queries and topics. Danny Sullivan at Search Engine Land goes in to more detail.

Search Assist is currently being tested across a randomly picked group of users, but a roll-out is planned for September this year.

There's a much better service called PredictAd that's in a public beta and can be seamlessly integrated on any website.. The cool thing with PredictAd is that you can place advertisements and RSS feeds into the pre-query form. Go to www.predictad.com to check it out
