E-mail addiction top 10

Mobile e-mail usage is on the rise in U.S., which means that so is the frequency and locations of checking e-mail. Checking e-mail from bed while in pajamas ranked as top unusual location for mobile device users.

In June, AOL performed its annual e-mail addiction survey and found that U.S. mobile e-mail users are increasingly married to their mobile devices.

Washington, DC is the most "email addicted" city in the country. Eighty-two percent of Washingtonians have multiple email accounts.

The top 10 cities are:

1. Washington, DC
2. Atlanta
3. New York
4. San Francisco
5. Houston
6. Los Angeles
7. Seattle
8. Orlando
9. Denver
10. Miami

While it may not be surprising that large metros have higher concentrations of heavy e-mail users, Americans are emailing anywhere and everywhere.
Fifty-nine percent of people emailing from portable devices are checking email in bed while in their pajamas; 53% in the bathroom; 37% are checking email while they drive; and 12% admit to checking email in church.

Many survey respondents reported planning vacations where the internet is accessible. Most said they check work e-mail at least once while on vacation.

The study also offers several tips to aid those addicted to e-mail.
Organize your e-mails by category, use your "away" message that automatically replies with details of when you will return or reply, and follow the rule of three: If you have emailed back and forth with the same person on the same topic more than three times, it is time to pick up the phone and have a conversation.
