Asia top-level domain to launch in October
Asia truly has arrived on the internet, and in October the continent will get its own “.asia” top-level domain.
From October this year applications for domain names under the new ".asia" top-level domain will begin to be accepted, according to DotAsia Organisation Ltd. Initially the addresses will only be made available to regional governments and those with trademarks registered before March 16, 2004.
Only legitimate requests will be considered and the applications, which won’t be based on a “first come, first served” basis, will be reviewed on an equal footing as they are received. The process isn’t accessible by automated robots. Should two or more parties require the same domain name, an auction will be held.
The .com suffix is generally associated with the U.S., now Asian businesses can differentiate themselves with the new domain.
The new .asia domain name is the newest of the recent addition of geographic suffix such as “.eu” for the European Union and “.cat” for the Catalan language.
