Across the globe, kids want technology
It doesn't matter where they are from, the world's youth love technology. According to a new study from MTV and Microsoft, kids see mobile phones, iPods and handheld devices as status symbols and use them often. However, these kids aren't geeks and really don't care how the gadgets work.
According to the study, technology has allowed youths to become more connected, have more friends and are more willing to share their thoughts.
"The power of online communication tools, like instant messenger and social networking sites, enables young people to communicate both privately and with multiple friends. Features in IM, like winks and emoticons, add to the fun of chatting and allow them to express themselves more deeply," said Caroline Vogt, Head of International Research, Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions.
This is great news for marketers because users aren't simply signing on to the web, they are asking for - and getting - information. As with several other studies, young users are more apt to listen to the advice of friends when buying products than simply relying on a brand name.
How can advertisers best take advantage of the technology craze? By creating not only an Internet homepage but also creating branded microsites within social networks, creating mobile homepages and offering social features like reviews, help areas and message boards within the online and mobile hubs.
