Online video viewer figures rising
Online video is becoming popular among Americans with viewer figures up for both weekly and daily video usage.
In 2006, 44 percent of online Americans aged 12-64 viewed online video once a week or more. That figure has risen to 52 percent, a growth of 18 percent. Daily usage within the same age group rose 56 percent to 14 percent.
"Clearly the use of online video demonstrates that the internet has become a mass platform for distributing video content to a wide cross-section of Americans," said Mike Vorhaus, senior vice president and managing director of Frank N. Magid Associates.
Males were the more frequent users of online video across all age groups. The heaviest users were young men. Eighty percent of young adult males (18-24) watch online video at least once a week, according to the survey results.
Just over half, 53 percent, of young adult females reported watching online video weekly. The lowest rate of usage was by older women (55-64) but even in this age group nearly 40 percent used online video weekly.
In terms of content being watched, news stories are the most watched online videos followed by jokes, movie previews and weather and in third place are user-generated videos, YouTube and music videos.
