European online ad spend jumps 50%
The online ad spend in Europe showed a scorching increase in 2006, jumping more than 50% to reach 10.8 billion euros. In 2005 the online ad spend brought in just over 4.5 billion euros.
Online advertising efforts comprised at least 10% of the total ad spends in the UK, Denmark and the Netherlands. According to a report by the Interactive Advertising Bureau - Europe, the UK led the way with more than 35% of the online ad total (3.1 billion euros), followed by Germany (1.7 billion euros) and France (1.1 billion euros).
Most of those online ad dollars were spent in the search sector (45%) and on display ads (31%). Classified advertising accounted for roughly 22% of the European online ad spend and email accounted for only 1.6%.
On average, advertisers spent 82 euros for every UK user, however in the 13 other European countries only about 39 euros were spent per user. By comparison, the US falls in between the UK and the rest of the European Union at $60 spent per user.
Overall in the UK advertising fell by nearly 3% in traditional avenues. This isn't a new trend as advertisers learn how much control they have over online campaigns and the relative savings that are offered by targeting very specific online demographics.

If the spend in 2005 was 4.5 billion Euro, and in 2006 it was 10.8 billion, then it must have more than doubled - and not only grown by more than 50%. Or are the numbers for 2005 wrong? Anyway, nice to see that online ads are booming in Europe.
