comScore: 1 billion videos streamed in March
Mark online giant Google as the leader for another Internet category. According to comScore's Video Metrix, Google led all other online properties for online video streams in March.
YouTube, a Google subsidiary, drove the bulk of video traffic to Google properties, accounting for more than 53 million unique streamers using Google and more than 1 billion initiated streams during the month. As a whole, Google properties accounted for roughly 57 million unique video streamers and 1.2 billion initiated streams.
Americans watched more than 7 billion total video streams in March. After Google, Yahoo accounted for the most streams (464 million). Fox Interactive was also in the top five with 421 million streams, followed by Viacom Digital with 260 million streams and Time Warner Network with 222 million streams.
Online video continues to grow, making the medium more important for online advertisers. More than 125 million American users watched streaming video an average of two times each day, indicating that there is a huge market for video.
The problem with online video is that many platforms haven't decided exactly how to monetize the platforms. Once that has been decided, whether by pre-rolling ads or offering clickable ads, online video is certain to help boost the ROI of online campaigns.
