Survey confirms important page elements for SEO
A recent survey by German firm Sistrix analyzed the web page elements of websites ranked top in Google.
Sistrix analyzed 10,000 random keywords and, for each one, they analyzed Google’s top 100 search results.
Results from Sistrix’s survey hold nothing new for experienced online marketers but go some way to demonstrating what is important when optimizing search engine rankings.
- Keywords in title and body tag, although title tag appears to be of more importance.
- Keywords in H2-H6 headline tags. H1 headline tags appear to have little effect.
- Keywords in image filenames and image alt attributes.
- Keywords in the domain name.
- Strong or bold tags appear to have a slight effect.
- Web pages that use very few or no parameters in URL’s (?id=123, etc.) tend to get ranked higher.
- PageRank.
- Inbound links influence page ranking with the top Google results generally having four times as many links as the sites ranked 11.
Commenting on the Sistrix analysis on WebProNews, Lee Odden said “It is important when using such information with search engine optimization projects to consider them a guide, not as rules."
