Social and travel sites gain traffic in Europe
Staying connected seemed to be on the minds of more European web-surfers throughout the month of March. According to online measurement firm comScore, social networking sites were the destinations of choice for French and UK browsers.
Google remained the overall top destination spot in both the UK and France, however the biggest gains were seen on social, travel and consumer sites.
According to comScore measurements in France, Amadeus Global Travel Destination and Hewlett Packard showed the greatest traffic increases (27% each), followed by Carrefour Group (26% increase) and Expedia, Inc (25% increase). HP's traffic increase was led by photo sharing site Snapfish.fr. Two blogging sites, Canalblog.com (24% traffic increase) and Radioblogclub.com (23% traffic increase) also showed large gains in March.
Similar gains were seen in the UK, with social networking sites showing some of the largest gains in visitors. Of specific interest is the 226% gain in traffic by Tagged.com.
Spring and summer travel plans were likely the biggest influencers for the dramatic increases seen at online travel hubs such as Expedia. The addition, by many travel hubs, of including social platforms like consumer reviews and destination information in addition to the traditional low prices on airfare, car rentals and hotel rooms is also likely pushing more traffic to these sites.
