New domain names may appear mid-2008
For the first time since 2000, new Internet domain names will join the ranks of the venerable ".com," ".net" and ".org" addresses, according to the agency charged with overseeing Internet domains. The general domain names could appear the middle of next year.

Although around 250 Internet domain exists for individual countries, business categories and industries, the decision to add to the so-called top-level domains will provide more choice to Internet users, according to Paul Twomey, Chief Executive of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN.)
"We want the diversity of the world's people, geography and business to be able to be represented in the domain name system," Twomey said in a statement.
Applications for new domain names will be accepted in early 2008 with new addressed adopted and in place by August 2008, reports the AP.
The latest round of domain names, including ".jobs," ".travel," and ".asia" occurred in 2004, only the second time new domain names were issued since the U.S. government gave ICANN the job in 2000.
