Google leads March search queries
Industries seeing a large burst of traffic should thank Google. Not only did Google lead the search-query pack in March, but the search engine is also the leading factor for visits to key industry websites.
According to new research from Hitwise, Google led all other search engines with 64% of searches in March. That is a 6% year over year increase. Yahoo was a distant second with 21% of March searches (1% decrease year over year) and MSN ranked third with 9% of search queries (4% decrease year over year). Ask.com ranked fourth, holding 3% of search queries (0.5% decrease year over year).
It is no surprise that Google is again leading the search pack; the search giant has been leading the other popular search engines for months. However, it is surprising the amount of traffic to other sites for which Google is responsible.
According to Hitwise, Google pushed more than 28% of traffic toward Health and Medical websites, 18% of Travel website traffic and 15% of Shopping and Classified website traffic. News and Media (13%), Entertainment (12%) and Business and Finance (9%) websites also benefited from Google searches.
For marketers, it is clear that using Google's paid search options would be a good investment. Much of the search engine's success is due to name recognition, and until a few other engine's begin to overtake Google's massive lead, it would behoove marketers to advertise with them.
