The announcement comes two years after Yahoo upgraded its email storage capacity to 1GB up from 4MB per account when it first launched the service in 1997. The upgrade in a way marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of Yahoo Mail, the post said.
The move is expected to rev up the competition for rivals Microsoft and Google, which provide 2 GB and 2.8 GB of free e-mail storage limits respectively.
"We hope we're setting a precedent for the future. Someday, can you imagine a hard drive that you can never fill," the blog read.
Yahoo! Mail was a launched as a transitional version of Rocketmail, a Web mail system developed by David Nakayama, Yahoo's Vice President of Engineering. Yahoo acquired the mail system from an online communications firm Four11 and relaunched it with several new feature including message alerts, page reminders and mail forwarding features.
