The top mobile sites mirror top online destinations

The first mobile website rankings are out from M:Metrics and it should come as no surprise which sites are the most popular.

by Kristina Knight

According to M:Metrics data, Google, Yahoo and MSN obtained the most mobile site visitors in February. Microsofts's Live.com and Disney's Go.com portal rounded out the top five destination hubs.

M:Metrics compiled the data using their new MeterDirect product, which monitors the mobile habits of about 500 mobile phone users. This is the first ranking using the new system. Even though the top five mobile sites are very similar to the top five traditional online destinations, roughly 10,000 mobile sites had recorded traffic in February.

Will Hodgman, CEO of M:Metrics, said (via AdWeek), "Advertisers need to know what people do on the medium instead of a preponderance of theories. This gets at true behavioral usage."

The company tracked Internet and video usage as well as SMS messaging to come up with the data. The company plans to continue recruiting panelists so that they can provide better mobile research for advertisers.

According to the research, mobile web visits last about 10 minutes and the most popular time to go online is between 8am and 5pm (traditional working hours in the United States). Friday is the most active day for the mobile web.
