2006 online advertising revenue hits record high
The sharp growth of online advertising is reflected in the U.S. online ad spending figures recently released by the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
According to new research by the IAB and PwC, 2006 saw a 34 percent rise in online advertising spending. They referred to the U.S. as a “healthy environment” for online ads, quoting 2006 revenues at $16.8 billion, a record high.
Last year's online ad spending totalled almost $4.8 billion in Q4, the most recorded for any three-month period over the last 10 years of IAB tracking.
"The continued growth of interactive advertising is clearly based on marketers' recognition that they connect with consumers most effectively through interactive media," said IAB chief executive and president, Randall Rothenberg.
As the internet grabs an ever increasing share of eyeball, marketers are shifting more of their budgets online. Piper Jaffray forecasts U.S. online advertising to reach $42 billion in 2011.

I think the growth is inevitable online when you consider all the additional benefits that it offers advertisers in terms of targeting, functionality and real measurement of return. Take a look at this http://luddites-or-laggards.blogspot.com/2007/03/is-internet-punching-below-its-weight.html where the questions still need to be answered lie around whether this is just the start and if growth should continue,as forecasted in the article, then who will be the beneficiaries of this

The growth is due to the online shift in business.businesses ,including those in the developing countries are taking advantage of the power of internet and i expect this growth to rise even more dramatically in the next year
