Google accused of supporting film pirates
A group of media companies is accusing Google of favoring sites that offer illegal movie downloads.
Time Warner, Walt Disney and News Corp. are among those alleging that Google knowingly allowed their website users to be directed to sites that sold pirated movie downloads.
It is claimed that employees of Google sold advertising to two websites on which they knew illegal downloads were being sold. They even went so far as suggesting keywords they could bid on, such as “pirate” and “bootleg movie download”. The two sites, EasyDownloadCenter.com and TheDownloadPlace.com, were attractive to Google due to their huge traffic and earned them an estimated $809,000 over a three year period, according to the WSJ’s report.
All this comes hot on the heels of Viacom demanding the removal of around 100,000 video clips being illegally broadcast on YouTube. Meanwhile, MySpace has licensed audio-fingerprinting technology so that companies can exclude unauthorized video content by tracking digital audio signatures in video and music files.
