Top 5 search sites for January
Don't look for Google to drop too far in the search rankings, at least not yet. According to new data from comScore, Google ranked first for January searches.
Of the 6.9 billion searches in January, Google sites captured about 47% of them. Yahoo was their closest competitor with 28%, MSN sites ranked third with 10.5% and the Ask network of sites came in fourth with 5.4% of all searches. Time Warner fell to fifth with 5% of all searches.
There is one change that could throw a wrench into Google's superiority: Yahoo's new Panama platform. According to analysts, the Panama launch will help Yahoo close the gap on Google. Already, the number 2 search engine is seeing change. The click through rates for Yahoo paid searches has grown since the Panama rollout. According to comScore, since the new model launched, Yahoo has seen click throughs increase by about 9%.
"While still in its early stages, any good news for Panama is good news for Yahoo! – and this early study shows plenty of good news,” said John Battelle, chairman and publisher of Federated Media (in a prepared statement).
The Panama release also changes Yahoo's click composition. The new system shows sponsored clicks as a percentage of the overall clicks. Sponsored clicks are also seeing a gain (11%) so far this year.
