The WoW Factor

An established online game sees its population exceed that of a small country.

by Helen Leggatt

The massively multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft (WoW), now boasts more than 8 million subscribers. If it were a country it would fall in to the top 100 most populated.

Players pay to play, first with the purchase of the game software and then around $15 per month to play online.

"We're ecstatic that the World of Warcraft community has continued to grow steadily since we launched the game," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment (via The Money Times).

The WoW subscriber base is made up of gamers from across the globe including 3.5 million from in China, 2 million from North America and over 1.5 million players across Europe. Some MMORPG’s have recently begun to allow in-game advertising, at this point in time there are no plans for WoW to follow suit, despite six other Acclaim games being added to an in-game ad network earlier this month.
