AT&T To Launch Ad-Based Revenue Model

Not wanting to be left behind, AT&T is planning for a new advertising-based revenue model for cellular customers.

The move comes after Sprint and Verizon announced plans for similar ventures in 2007.

The new ad model will be the base of several wireless service initiatives in the new year according to chairman and CEO Edward Whitacre, Jr (via MediaBuyerPlanner).

According to executives, the plan will include selling ad space on cellular phones, on AT&T television and broadband Internet services. AT&T says the plan should raise billions more in revenue each year.

The new service will be based on the cell provider's U-Verse package, a telephone, Internet, television combination aimed at 58 million wireless and 67 million land-line consumers.
