Online Display Ads on the Increase

Financial services advertisers are still the big guns in online display ads, but the numbers are increasing for other sectors as well. In November more than 259 billion display ads were run online.

According to the latest AdRelevance report from Nielsen//Netratings, the financial sector was responsible for the most (25%). That is down from 30% in October.

Online media were ranked second highest with 20% of online display ads – that is up from 17% in October. In the third slot, retail goods and services at 16% - that is the same as October. Telecoms came in at 10% - also the same as October. Public services rounded out the top 5 with 9% - that is up from 8% in October.

Email was responsible for just over 47% of all impressions. Yahoo drew 40% of those impressions, MSN’s Hotmail 5%. Those numbers are also slightly down from October.

Social networking sites were responsible for about 15% of all impressions. The MySpace giant accounted for just over 14% of all social networking impressions in October.

Finally, portals like search engines were responsible for roughly 7% of display ad impressions. News sites accounted for 4% and entertainment sites drew about 3% of impressions.
