College Kids Choose Facebook
Want to know what the youth market wants? Here’s a secret: for the first time ever, both college-aged (17-25 years of age) men and women chose social networking site Facebook as their favorite website.
"For the first time ever, Facebook was ranked number one among both men and women," said Josh Weil of Youth Trends (via eMarketer). "Based on the findings, Facebook is more than likely to be their first visit of the day."
The survey, part of an October Top 10 report from Youth Trends, found that more than 50% of females and more than 35% of males listed Facebook as their favorite social networking site. Other favorites? Google, Yahoo and ESPN. Meanwhile, video hub YouTube was the fifth favorite site for both men and women.
MySpace ranked sixth with the guys, but came in second with the girls.
As for other media, females watch Grey’s Anatomy (44%), read Cosmopolitan (41%) and play Spider Solitaire (16%) the most. Males, on the other hand, watch Family Guy (20%), read Sports Illustrated (25%) and play Madden 2007 (35%).
The survey is a clear indicator that online marketers have a near-captive young audience on social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. It also indicates that online video hubs like YouTube – which doubled in popularity among young men – are prime real estate for advertising.
