Ask.com Asks For More
IAC’s Ask.com is betting on new features helping them close the gap on search front-runners Google, Yahoo and MSN Windows LiveSearch in 2007.
Earlier this month, the company announced the opening of Ask City, a platform that allows users to search for specific local businesses and events. Through the platform, consumers can even make reservations. Now, Ask.com says they will pull financial services and real estate information for use with the Ask City platform.
By pulling different types of information from other IAC properties like TicketMaster and CitySearch into Ask city, IAC is hoping to create a one-stop-shop for consumers.
The company is also launching AskX, a new platform that gives Ask.com search results on a three-paned page. Powered by AJAX, the left pane is the search control panel that changes as the query is entered. The middle pane gives actual search results, along with Ask.com’s famous “binocular” feature, and the right pane previews other search results – video, blogs, images and news.
The last few months, Ask.com search features have ranked 5th for total searches, behind Google, Yahoo, Windows LiveSearch and AOL. However, Ask is showing the largest growth with 33% year over year growth in 2006.
Google, the top ranked search provider, rose 31%; Yahoo rose 29%, and Windows LiveSearch was actually down 12% in the November rankings.
