Yahoo Grows, Google Slows
Google is still the #1 search provider on the web, but in the latest numbers from Nielsen//Netratings, Yahoo’s search rating rose as Google’s slid. Does this mean that the Google monster is vulnerable?
Most likely, no. Google still held nearly half of all search enquiries during the period. However, Yahoo has grown more than Google in year-over-year growth, perhaps showing that searchers are beginning to trust other sources besides the largest search engine in the world.
Nielsen//Netratings tracked the top search providers in October. More than 3 billion searchers turned to Google. That is 49.6% of all searches for the month. Yahoo was the closest competitor with 1.4 billion searches (23.9%). MSN/Windows Live search ranked third with 539 million (8.8%), AOL was fourth with 375 million (6.2%) searches and Ask.com rounded out the top five with 168 million performed searches (2.8%).
The more surprising data compiled from the study is that in year to year growth, Yahoo seems to be outpacing rival Google. Google search has grown about 23% from 2005 to 2006. In contrast Yahoo has shown YOY growth of 30%.
In another note MSN/Windows Live Search is the only search engine that lost share year over year, down 8% from 2005 numbers.
