The Masses Get Email on the Go

This Thanksgiving, European startup Berggi will launch an email and IM service in US and Spain for those with even the most basic of mobile phones.

Berggi’s mission is to bring mobile messaging to the masses. “That means developing a service that can easily be run over any phone, over any service, and at a price point that makes sense to the average customer,” said Berggi’s CEO Babur Ozden.

The service, which began development in 2003 will go live on Thursday this week. Ozden claims to have already signed up around 100,000 users. On offer is a simplified alternative to current email delivery services, such as Blackberry.

Forrester’s Charles Golvin said Berggi is looking to partner with established consumer brands to enable customers to connect with like-minded users in wireless versions of online social networks.

According to Bear Stearns analyst, Andrew Neff, the potential market for mobile email is enormous. “The question is what price of service and handset is required to spark that growth.”

Despite the rapid adoption of multifunctional smartphones, basic models are still used by two-thirds of the U.S. mobile market. Blackberry or rival email services, using Palm or Microsoft software, are still too costly for most non-business users.

While Montreal’s Oz Communications already offers U.S. and European consumers similar email delivery services, through major national carriers, Berggi’s service is direct to the consumer and does not rely on carrier partners. For US$9.99 per month, on top of any existing payment plans, Berggi customers can access a variety of messaging platforms, such as Yahoo!, AOL, and Google.
