Launch of Website Devoted to TV Ads
The site, to be called adTV, will be devoted to old and new TV commercials, dished up to visitors as entertainment. It is due to be launched on January 15, 2006.
adTV is the brainchild of founders Mark Patricof, ex-CAA staffer and founder of KPE, and American film producer and writer, Steven Bochco.
"It's an opportunity for advertisers and consumers to meet," said Patricof (via Variety).
With the rise in popularity of video-sharing sites, such as YouTube, consumers are accustomed to watching video content online.
"I think we potentially could be catching a wave," said Bochco.
Unlike YouTube, consumers will not be able to upload their own videos. Instead content will be managed by the advertisers and users will be able to search by theme, product or company.
"When Volkswagen comes out with a hot ad or Sony is launching PS3, nobody knows where to go to find that commercial," Patricof said. "We can be that platform."
Another twist to the YouTube model will be the recognition of talent and provision of compensation for use of the work online.
It’s no coincidence that the site launch is planned for January 15, just in time to take advantage of the biggest advertising day of the year – the Super Bowl.
“Ads are the only thing bigger than the game on Super Bowl Sunday,” said Patricof.

The one thing I like about this, isn't what they offer, but the fact that they are offering something that isn't the same as the endless stream of comedy sites, TV download offering etc. This has some interesting potential to develop into a unique site that is worth visiting. I wonder if there will be some of the old time commercials as part of their service?
