"We want to be where people are gathering," said Ro Parra, senior vice president for Dell’s Home and Small Business division. They are among others who are picking the marketing trend of establishing themselves in the virtual world.

Parra’s avatar took the stage with Second Life Founder Phillip Rosedale’s. The launch was held in the factory room, but Dell Island also boasts a welcome area, conference facility, a museum and more.
Not only will residents be able to buy virtual PCs, they will be able to order real machines for their real lives. The ability to work directly with its customers is what turned Dell on to having a presence in Second Life. They will be able to collect feedback on new products and work with the residents to develop new products that could eventually end up in the real world.

Several global companies have already established themselves in Second Life which currently has 1.39 million residents of which 533,825 have logged on in the last 60 days. The increasing availability and adoption of broadband has aided the increase in users. Around 42% of Americans have a high-speed connection at home, according to the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
