Fox Secures 20% Streaming Market
New rankings show Fox Interactive websites, including MySpace, have taken a little over 20% of the U.S. online video streaming market for August. Fox saw 1.4 billion streams, outpacing both Yahoo and YouTube sites.
In August, the video streaming audience grew by 4% to 110.3 million people, that is about 64% of the U.S. population. According to new data from comScore, in August Yahoo had 823 million streams, or about 11.8% of the market and YouTube saw 688 video streams, about 9.9%. Also in the top five for streaming video were Viacom Digital (4.1%) and the Time Warner Network (3.4%).
However, Fox didn’t have the largest traffic numbers, according to representatives. Erin Hunter, executive vice president of comScore’s Media and Entertainment Group said, “While these measures provide important information on the number of unique visitors to a site, they do not properly measure how many people are actually viewing video content across the Web and how many streams they are viewing, both of which are vital to understanding video's advertising capacity.”
Yahoo, not Fox, actually drew the most unique visitors streaming video. With 39.9 million unique visitors, just ahead of Fox's 39.5 million the Yahoo numbers indicate that more people saw their video but fewer people saw more video at Fox’s sites. YouTube ranked third for unique visitors with 35.5 million visitors.
