Microsoft To Offer Free Web Based Programs
Microsoft plans to offer free-web based versions of its word processing and spreadsheet programs, a move that is seen as a rebuff to Google and other companies who already offer free versions of these types of programs.
by Nidhi Sharma
Though the online versions may lack many features available in the full versions of Microsoft's Office suite of applications, Microsoft is planning to fund them via advertising.
The BBC reports that the programs are likely to be based on Microsoft's Works software suite. This suite is often installed on low cost personal computers.
Microsoft has not released a particular time about the release of the programs, but the company told the Reuters news agency that it was "considering" new distribution and payment models for its software.
Though Microsoft's Office suite is hugely popular in the business market it faces competition ever increasingly thanks to Google and others as rivals produce and release free versions of programs that do the same job as those in the package.
