Internet Closes in On 100 Million Websites
The Internet grew by more than 4 million sites last month. According to the results of a survey released by Netcraft, by the start of this month the list of hostnames had grown to 96,854,877.
Netcraft said that since June, this year another 15-and-a-half million sites have gone live. At the same time it attributed the increase to a growing popularity of the Google and Microsoft blogging services.
The web analysis company said in August Windows Live Spaces added 1.3 million hostnames while Google accounted for nearly half-a-million. According to this latest Netcraft survey, the monthly average of new hostnames has nearly doubled from 2.75 million over the first five months of the year to an average 5.4 million since June.
The Current trend suggests that by the end of this month the Internet could grow beyond 100 million websites.
This emerging development in web hosting is also impacting shares across the industry. For instance, according to Netcraft, last month Microsoft gained 1.13 percentage points to 31.26%, while Apache lost 0.88 points and ended up at 61.64%.
