In 2001, the companies began their original collaboration, trying to develop networked storage systems for corporations and home computer users. Today’s extension will allow the companies to continue the partnership through 2011.

In a statement, Dell said more than 34,000 Dell/EMC branded systems had been distributed to more than 10,000 customers worldwide since their collaboration began in 2001.

With the new systems, customers could more effectively store, manage and protect their information through networked storage. “From the outset, Dell and EMC implemented a unique model of sales, marketing, engineering and manufacturing collaboration to leverage each other’s strengths to deliver compelling value to customers,” said the press release.

Joe Tucci, EMC chairman, president and CEO, said, "The unprecedented combination of leading capabilities from EMC and Dell has helped change the storage landscape. We are extending the relationship well into the future to ensure continued innovation, momentum and commitment to our mutual customers."

According to industry data, in 2005, the Dell/EMC collaboration was the fastest growing top-10 disk storage system vendor.
